Usage-based and tracking programs: what they watch and what to ask

Some insurers offer programs that measure how you drive. Whether that is a good trade depends on what is measured and what it can change.

01What these programs are

Usage-based insurance, sometimes called telematics, ties part of a policy to driving data instead of only to broad categories like age and ZIP code. Programs are voluntary in most places, and each insurer designs its own.

02What may be measured

  • Miles driven and when you drive.
  • Hard braking, fast acceleration and cornering.
  • Phone use while the vehicle is moving, in some app-based programs.
  • Speed, in some programs.

03What it can change

Depending on the program, results may lead to a discount, no change, or in some cases a higher price. Some programs only offer a discount at renewal, while others may adjust on a schedule. We do not know the terms of any particular program and we do not quote prices.

04Questions worth asking

  • What exactly is collected, and is location included?
  • How long is the data kept, and who can it be shared with?
  • Can the program raise my price, or only lower it?
  • Can I leave at any time, and what happens to my data if I do?

05Do you drive in a way that suits it?

People who drive few miles or mostly during the day sometimes find these programs a better fit than people who commute at night. That is a general observation, not a promise about any policy.
