Lapses, cancellations and non-renewals: when coverage ends

A policy can end in a few different ways. Knowing which one you are looking at changes what you do next.

01Three words that sound alike

  • Lapse: coverage stops, often because a payment was missed.
  • Cancellation: the policy is ended before its full term, by you or by the insurer.
  • Non-renewal: the insurer chooses not to offer another term.

02Why a gap matters

A break in coverage can mean fines, registration problems, or trouble if a crash happens during it. Some insurers also look at gaps when pricing a new policy.

03Notices and deadlines

Insurers are generally required to send written notice before cancelling or not renewing, with timing rules that vary by state. Open mail and email from your insurer promptly, and keep copies.

04If you are changing insurers

Avoid a gap by setting the new policy to start before the old one ends, and wait for confirmation before cancelling. Ask about any refund of unused premium.

05If you cannot pay

Contact your insurer early. Some offer payment plans or other options. Your state insurance department can also explain what resources exist where you live.
